He currently holds a chair in Old Testament, or Hebrew Bible, at the University of Göttingen, in Germany. Through extensive authorial, editorial, and organizational undertakings, Spieckermann has exerted considerable influence on Hebrew Bible research. == Life == Spieckermann studied theology and assyriology at the universities of Münster and Göttingen from 1969 to 1975. Having already specialized in the field of Old Testament, or Hebrew Bible, during his university studies, he served as scientific assistant to the Göttingen Old Testament scholar Lothar Perlitt after his exams (1975–88). In 1982, he earned a doctor theologiae and secured habilitation in the field of Old Testament Studies five years later, in 1987. While in Göttingen, Spieckermann also worked closely with the renowned Dutch assyriologist Riekele Borger. He served as Privatdozent for two years in Göttingen before receiving a call to the University of Zürich as associate professor of Old Testament and the history of Near Eastern religion, in 1989. Three years later, in 1992, he moved to the University of Hamburg to hold a full professorship in the same field.
